Irondequoit Creek is a canoe and kayak navigable waterway from the southern end of Irondequoit Bay to the area behind Panorama Plaza with access points at Ellison Park. The section upstream from Panorama Plaza is a white-water section to Channing H. Philbrick Park. The creek is also a popular fishing location.
The route between Ellison Park and Irondequoit Bay is an easy to moderate run of approximately 4.5 miles and will normally take about 4.5 hours to navigate. "The current is not strong (except after significant spring melts or a heavy rain storm), so it’s easy to do a round trip. The cattail marshes between Browncroft and Empire Boulevards are fun to explore with lots of nooks and crannies. A variety of birds either live or migrate through here.
Mute swans, green herons, moorhens, kingbirds and ducks have been spotted." 1 Linear Park whitewater section: "The Linear Park section of Irondequoit Creek in New York is 0.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II(III) section. The beautiful scenery of Monroe County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far." 2 Allens Creek and Grass Creek are notable tributaries.
