Culver University East

New

Food & Drink

East Avenue Culver Road/University Avenue/East Avenue (CUE) is a mixed commercial/residential neighborhood that borders Brighton. Its three main streets - Park Avenue, East Avenue, and University Avenue - are all quite distinct from one another. The East Avenue Historic District terminates at Prober Street, at which East abruptly turns into a suburban-style commercial strip before leaving the city and resuming its historic residential character. University, meanwhile, has been revived as a funky old industrial district. Several of Rochester's hottest health clubs and restaurants are located here, mixed in with revitalized industrial buildings and a few big-box chains. Park Avenue and the side streets where you'll find the neighborhood's residential areas, which consist of single- and multi-family homes, a few townhouses, and several vintage apartment buildings. The CUE Neighborhood Association was formed in the mid-1980s to combat a proposed Can of Worms project that would have expanded I-490. CUE also overlaps with the ABC Streets Neighborhood. Don's Original

New

Food & Drink

Outside - SeaBreeze Area location, 4-2008 Inside - SeaBreeze Area location, 4-2008 Don's burgers and wonderful onion rings, 4-2008 Penfield - Aug 2008 BradMandell Don's Original is a diner serving hots, hamburgers, custard and other standard diner fare like hot turkey sandwiches and strip steaks. Don's prides itself on retaining the same quality and feel, and pretty much the same core menu, for over 50 years. Judging from the pictures on the wall in every Don's, as well as on the website, your experience today is not all that different from what it would have been in the early 50's. Customers still order by lining up behind a large "All Service from This Counter" sign and choosing from a brightly-painted menu board. The food is cooked as you wait. Seating is either in a booth or on a stool at the counter. And Don's crowd still consists of a wide range of customers, including teenages, families with kids, and older folks. Don's slogan is "Where Quality Predominates", and it attempts to live up to that standard by making fresh what is often pre-packaged at newer fast-food restaurants. For example, if you ask for onion rings, they'll be made from real slices of onion and hand-battered, and the custard is made on-premises. Don's Original began life as Don and Bob's, with locations in the Seabreeze Area and on Monroe Avenue in Brighton. The original Brighton location was sold to another owner in the 70's and has now closed. The Seabreeze location remained under the control of Don Barbato, the original Don, who changed the name to Don's Original because of issues with the original Monroe Avenue location. The new Brighton and Penfield locations have opened in the last few years. The full, convoluted history of Don and Bob's and Don's Original is available on the website. Free Wifi

Frontier Field

New

Parks & Nature

Frontier Field is the 10,607-seat stadium that serves as home of the Rochester Red Wings Triple-A league baseball team. It is located on the NorthWest side of downtown near Kodak Headquarters. Built in 1996 for $35.3 million, primarily as a baseball stadium, Frontier was also the home of the Rochester Raging Rhinos until the opening of Paetec Park in 2006. The Rochester Rattlers lacrosse team also played home games at Frontier for two seasons before moving to Paetec Park. In 2013 they also hosted many local hockey teams for Frozen Frontier Concessions include the usual ballpark fare like hots (Zweigle's, of course), peanuts, burgers, nachos, cotton candy and beer; Not-so-usual fare like pasta, crepes, and pulled-pork nachos (ed. Yes, it is as good as it sounds); and Rochester/WNY favorites like Garbage Plates, Beef on Weck, and Rohrbach's beer. Cheap entertainment tip: The promotions schedule often includes a firework display after Friday home games for the Red Wings. If you aren't interested in catching a game, but would like to see the fireworks, take your car up to the top of the nearby High Falls Parking Garage. You'll have a great view, and after the display you will be able to make it out of the garage before the stadium spills over and mobs the streets. Parking is $4, but if you're exceptionally cheap you can park elsewhere and ride the elevator to the top. Also be sure to get a good look at the High Falls while you're in the area. Ralph's Kendall Inn

New

Food & Drink

Ralph's Kendall Inn is the only bar and eatery within the town of Kendall. They have a limited menu, but it includes the essentials like burgers, subs, and "their own version of the Garbage Plates which they call a Farmer's Plate. This is a accurate name, I have gone there for plates with friends that are in fact farmers. The plates and food are good. They probably have the best garbage plate in Orleans County. The bar side of the business does attract a lot of business from locals. The Kendall Inn is a stop on the snowmobile trails that cut through Orleans County. During the winter, the side yard is packed with snowmobilers looking for a bit to eat and to wet their whistles. It is frequently referred to as "K-I" by locals." 1

Cheeburger Cheeburger

New

Arts & Culture

Cheeburger Cheeburger was a 50's-style chain burger place offering burgers in five different sizes, ranging from the 5.5 oz. Classic to the huge (20 oz.) Famous Pounder; add fries, onion rings and a drink. They also offered other sandwiches and wraps plus salads to round out the menu. Their Invent Your Own Shake or Malt was popular as well. See Online Menu for details. The Rochester location was originally in the Port of Rochester (the former Fast Ferry terminal) in Charlotte, so it was only a seasonal venue. Outside seating was limited, so you sometimes had to wait if you want to watch the boat traffic on the Genesee River. According to the Democrat and Chronicle, the owners closed the Port of Rochester location in August 2015 and re-opened on November 6, 2015 at CityGate, in the Upper Mount Hope area of the city. In October 2018, Cheeburger Cheeburger in CityGate closed due to eviction. According to WROC TV-8, the eviction notice was given by Marshal Sande Macaluso.
