250 South Ave.

New

Food & Drink

An empty lot and a decrepit building sit on a 2/3 acre lot at 250 South Ave. Behind the now closed Brickyard Pub, it was the site of a city public bathhouse and a public swimming pool, the Natatorium. The building in the rear of the complex probably served as shipping/receiving for the Natatorium when it was operational. The pool closed in 1975 after the City ceased repairing the roof (damaged by humidity of the pool and the weather), and was demolished in 1977. The remaining building stored voting machines at one time but now only supports an electronic billboard facing I-490. In March 2007, the large building in the right side of the photo below, was purchased by a group of local developers known as Riverview Lofts, LLC. Located at 1 Capron Street (aka 228 South Avenue), the construction of the 19 residential loft condos has begun and the only loft condos in Rochester, NY are for sale. 1 Bedrooms start at $139,000 and 2 bedrooms start at $179,000. The project was developed by Riverview Lofts, LLC and managed by Belmont Properties until it was completed in 2012. Google Maps shows a satellite photo of the building. According to City property details, as of 2006-Feb-8 the city owns the property, but a group of architects have since bought it, plan to cut additional windows, and convert it into downtown lofts. The interior features a grand staircase. In January 2009 the renovation of the building is completed. Plan Architectural Studio moved from High Falls and will occupy space on the first floor. The second floor of the building also contains office space. There are two (1,200 square feet) one-bedroom lofts on the third floor. The newly added fourth floor, contains a two-bedroom penthouse apartment (over 2,000 square feet). Also added were a four-story elevator, stair tower and outdoor spiral staircase. The two lofts each have 1-1/2 baths, 13- to 15-foot-high ceilings, exposed brick on the interior walls, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, contemporary plumbing fixtures, gas fireplaces, spa-style bathrooms (designed to allow natural light into the shower through translucent glass) with large walk-in showers and two-person soap tubs. The penthouse includes many of the same features, in addition to another full bathroom, an area with an open floor-plan, called a “great room,” and 400-foot roof terrace. There’s also private on-site parking. Here are some updated photos: view from the South Wedge one of the kitchens

Abandoned Chapel in Mt. Hope Cemetery

New

Civic

Decayed organ. The Abandoned Chapel in Mt. Hope Cemetery lies just a few feet from the road within the fence bordering Mt. Hope Cemetery near the southerly Mt Hope Ave gate, a few blocks from Elmwood Avenue. It is one of two chapels in the cemetery. This is the south chapel; the north chapel and crematorium, which are also unused, are behind the fountain back a ways from the cemetery's northerly gate on Mt Hope Ave near Robinson Dr which goes through Highland Park. The Friends of Mount Hope refer to this Chapel as the "1912 Chapel," based on the date it was first used. The Chapel's windows and doors are all secured. However, the main entryway is loosely secure at best. Visitors, who can access the interior, are treated to a breathtaking site of light filtering through the glass down onto the decaying pews left inside. The Chapel is small and was built by the city for funeral services of those being interred in the cemetery. It has not been used in many years because of serious structural problems which are easy to see if you look over the outside of the building. Excessive differential settling of the foundation caused the problems. It's a very pretty little building, but the repair expenses cannot be justified by returning it to use as a chapel. However, a number of years ago, the city indicated an intent to reuse it as a mausoleum by creating spaces (niches) inside for interring cremated remains. The prospective sale of the niches was expected to justify the repair expenses. I don't know what happened to that plan. The Friends of Mt Hope Cemetery is a great source of information about this and other structures in the cemetery. 1912 Chapel, photos and article on the local commercial website nyfalls.com Exploration Photos Status Rumor as of April 20, 2009 has it that the chapel will be undergoing restoration as part of a grant (whether to the City of Rochester or Mt. Hope Cemetery itself is unknown) from the Federal stimulus package. As of Feb 28, 2009, the chapel was boarded up and could not be entered.

Abandoned Penfield Rinky Dink mini golf course

New

Sports & Recreation

The Abandoned Penfield Rinky Dink mini golf course was located on Panorama Trail South between Vision Dodge and the driving range on North Washington Street. It's been closed for several years and the property has not been kept up, so it's quite overgrown. The putting green carpet is torn off of most of the course, probably by the skaters that have been seen utilizing the more interesting holes for skating practice. There's a small amount of graffiti and it looks like someone used the ticket stand as target practice, but for the most part the destruction of the wooden benches and stairways seems to be from the weather and plants. UPDATE: As of 9/22/07, the courses have been dismantled. All the wood seen in the pictures has been removed and all structures have been torn down including the light house and the ticket house. The parking lot has been bulldozed and there are piles of dirt and rocks in the corners. You can still find a lot of golf balls and putters though and it's still an interesting place to look around. August 12, 2014 - This lot has been cleared out completely; trees, light posts, and all. Does anybody know what is being built on the land? UPDATE: Oct 6, 2016: A Hampton Inn is currently under construction here. Bamba Bistro

New

Food & Drink

Bamba Bistro, at night (04-28-2008) Kobe Beef with Herbed Potatoes; Goat Cheese and Beet Salad (12-31-2007) Bamba Bistro was a casual re-incarnation of its previously formal atmosphere, when the upscale restaurant was called the "Rio Bamba." The chef and ownership was the same, however, the price-point and menu theme was different. Dinner entree prices were between $12 and $32. Lunch entree prices were between $8 and $20. Starting Fall 2005, they started offering lunch Mon-Fri. They took seasonal ingredients into account in their ever-changing menu that included a raw bar. The location made it easy to have dinner before walking to the bars across the street on Alexander. Valet parking was necessary if you wanted to park in their lot for dinner. Their valet had been working there for 10 years. They had two meeting/banquet rooms for 10-80 people. One RocWiki community member said: The food is pretty rockin' - Chef Cohen is a master of presentation, and offers a variety of solid options. A recent visit involved an arugula salad with a very lightly fried block of goat cheese, over cherries, and home made pasta with a shitake mushroom sauce. Both great, but the pasta is atypical - most dishes here are a little heavier, and substantially meatier. I'll update this with some price information soon, but the quick version is that it isn't cheap. Think salads between $5 and $10, entrees around or over $20. Everything is house-made, including their ice cream. Bamba Bistro closed in April 2014. The location is now Ox and Stone.

Bushnell's Basin

New

Parks & Nature

Historic Bushnell's Basin is set on the boundaries of the towns of Pittsford and Fairport on the Erie Canal; overlapping each town. An up-and-coming location for the past decade, Bushnell's Basin has hosted several new projects enhancing its location and aesthetic appeal. It is the home of the volunteer Bushnell's Basin Fire Department (BBFD), which is situated in the center of the Basin and is currently constructing a new state-of-the-art facility. There are several neighborhoods surrounding the Basin, which are almost evenly split between Fairport and Pittsford mailing addresses. The surrounding residents marvel at the close proximity of a drug store (Eckerd's), a wide array of eateries (Pontillo's, Bruegger's bagels, Tom Wahl's, Abbott's Frozen Custard, Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters, Cascade Cafe, Dunkin Donuts), gas stations (Mobil and the newly-constructed Hess), a playground/park with lit up tennis courts (Kreag Road Park), and mostly everything you need in a green-grassed, picket-fenced, surburban life. Many residents enjoy a walk on the canal with an Abbott's in tow, or a trip to the Tennis Club of Rochester to watch the anticipated District Tournaments each summer. The quaint basin is not far from the Perinton Wegmans, Powder Mills Park, Eastview Mall, or Highway 490; perhaps these are all factors in the nearly unbearable rush hour traffic de facto forbidding all left-hand turns.

Café Sasso identifies very much as a second-wave coffeehouse. Says one of the owners, "You walk into these [third-wave] coffee shops and it's usually no art on the wall, very minimalistic science-y lab and that's cool, and that's been hitting big the last four years. . . We're old school; we're like the 1960s poetry, art music - independent second wave is not going anywhere. We're here, we're strong." 1 The interior is done up in an Art Nouveau style. The location was previously the Park Ave Boulder. It was purchase in 2015 by longtime employees Peter and Jessica. The word sasso means "stone" in Italian, an homage to their origins. Cayuga Lake

Parks & Nature

'The Indian name "Cayuga" means "boat landing." Many people identify with Cayuga Lake because of the line "Far Above Cayuga’s Waters" in the Cornell_University song. Cayuga Lake, the longest of the Finger Lakes, is just under 40 miles long, is 3 1/2 miles wide at the widest point, and has an average width of 1 3/4 miles. It is 435 feet deep at the deepest point off King Ferry (second only to Seneca Lake in depth) and at 384 feet above sea level is the lowest of the Finger Lakes. In addition to the Cayuga Inlet at Ithaca, five tributaries at the southern end feed the lake: Cascadilla Creek, Fall Creek, Salmon Creek, Six-Mile Creek and Taughannock Creek. Cayuga Lake outlets into the Seneca and Cayuga Canal, which joins the northern ends of Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. This canal connects with the Erie Canal north of Seneca Falls. Lake Ontario can be accessed from Cayuga Lake via the Erie Canal, Cross Lake and the Oswego Canal.' *Info is an excerpt from Persons, Places and Things In the Finger Lakes Region by Emerson Klees

Christ Church Schola Cantorum

New

Civic

Christ Church Schola Cantorum (aka Schola Cantorum) is a vocal group of the Christ Church Rochester (Episcopal) in downtown Rochester. The group takes its name from the Schola Cantorum, or Papal Choir from the time of Gregory the Great. 1. Some of the following may be material from the group's CD liner - see Christ Church web page. Performances The vocal group performs the weekly Office of Compline at the church on Sunday evenings at 9 p.m. (October through April). Compline is the name of the last Office (service) of the monastic day - a ceremony of closing prayers before bed. Its origins date back to the 4th Century monastic custom of private prayer and devotion before retiring. St. Benedict is responsible for the name of the office, its liturgical character and arrangement. The group sings the Compline Service a cappella (without accompaniment) and combines Gregorian chant and early, baroque, and twentieth-century sacred motets. Compline is brief (30 minutes) and performed entirely by candlelight. This restful and serene "service" allows listeners to pause and reflect at the beginning of one week - or the closing of another. CC Compline is free (donations accepted) and everyone is welcome. A prelude on the Craighead-Saunders organ is played as the audience arrives. On the first Sunday of each month, Compline is preceded by a Candlelight Concert beginning at 8:30 p.m. featuring area musicians. Free parking is available in the lot on Lawn Street behind Christ Church. Recordings The Christ Church Schola Cantorum is recognized nationally as a leading ensemble for the performance of early sacred choral music and chant, contemporary music, and choral improvisation. The Schola has produced two CDs, both available through GOTHIC Records; the most recent is a recording of the music of David Conte released on the ARSIS label in 2008. Schola recordings have been broadcast nationally on Minnesota Public Radio and Richard Gladwell's radio show With Heart and Voice. In addition to singing compline, the group performs regularly for local music festivals and concert series such as Eastman's annual EROI Festival, the Rochester Early Music Festival, Music at St. Anne's series, the Memorial Art Gallery, Elmira College Concerts, and others. Stephen Kennedy, Director Kennedy is the founder and director of CC Schola Cantorum, is the music director at Christ Church and Director of Chapel Music and Instructor in Liturgical Music at Bexley Hall Episcopal Seminary. He also teaches at the Eastman School of Music and Nazareth College. He has been a performer and lecturer for local and regional events of the American Guild of Organists, and has given choral workshops in the U.S. and abroad. He composes liturgical and choral music as well as chamber music and compositions incorporating computer-generated sounds and improvisation. 1See also Catholic Encyclopedia and Encyclopedia Britannica

Cobb's Hill Recreation Center

New

Parks & Nature

The history of Lake Riley Lodge (formerly known as Cobb's Hill Recreation Center) began in December 1908, with George Eastman's offer to donate the costly north side of Cobb's Hill (named for resident Edna Cobb, who previously owned the land) to the City for a new park, which was developed in conjunction with a second reservoir at Cobb's Hill (the first was atop Highland Park). George Eastman's gift came with a caveat??? that the City acquire the adjoining Eastern Widewaters tract, (once a part of the Erie Canal) to assure recreational uses for the park. Under the leadership of then-Mayor James G. Cutler, the City took up Eastman's offer, and many recreational uses were made of the Eastern Widewaters area at the base of the hill, later known as Lake Riley, in the following years. Named for William S. Riley (1858-1928), the City's Dep. Commissioner of Parks (1915-18) and later Commissioner (1918-25), the pond remained a popular venue for such activities as ice-skating, boating and fishing throughout his tenure. Today, the lake is primarily a restful sanctuary for park visitors and wildlife. Now to be known as Lake Riley Lodge, the warm, cozy lodge-like recreation center constructed adjacent to the lake early in the depression era has been a popular venue for generations of Rochesterians visiting the scenic, multi-faceted park. The park continues to offer incredible recreational facilities, including tennis courts, basketball courts, softball fields, a playground, picnic areas and the newly renovated Lake Riley Lodge, to be used for summer youth programs, and also now available for the public to "permit" for conferences and family special occasions. The facility accommodates a maximum of 125 individuals for a $200 per day fee ($325/day holidays).

Schooners sailed into Maxwell Bay to trade wheat for the flour that was made at the gristmill that still stands on the property since 1794. The Inn sits on six acres of peace and tranquil beauty surrounded by a woodland wildlife preserve and apple orchards on the shores of Lake Ontario, along the Seaway Trail. See the Footprint Press page for more information and links. This article needs some reorganization and additions. Next step: move the B&B's to separate pages.

Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School

New

Education

Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, next to Highland Park, is a small but distinct part of the city's higher education offerings. Its beautiful campus sits on a hill overlooking the southern portion of Monroe County and its brick spires can be seen popping through their surrounding trees from South Goodman Street. The school has a very diverse Christian background and welcomes students from all faith traditions. The CRCDS offers Master of Divinity and Master of Arts degrees, as well as a Doctor of Ministry degree. There is some on-campus housing available. Other campus resources include a chapel, an expansive library and a bookstore. History: The school today was formed as a union between many different theological schools and its history is one of frequent addition and subtraction. In 1850, the Rochester Theological Seminary was formed in conjunction with the University of Rochester and was affiliated with the (Baptist) Colgate Theological Seminary in Hamilton, NY. The two seminaries merged in 1928 to become the Colgate Rochester Divinity School and built a campus on a large hill in southern Rochester. Campus construction was financed by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The school opened itself to female students in 1961, when the Chicago-born women's Baptist Missionary Training School merged with the Rochester school. The Crozer Theological Seminary - alma mater of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - also moved to Rochester from Pennsylvania to merge in 1970. Thus, the present name of the school was formed - the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School. This was a school that welcomed students from all ecumenical backgrounds but whose roots were strongly Baptist. Bexley Hall, an Episcopalian seminary from Kenyon College in Ohio, joined the CRCDS around 1968, creating a diversity of Christian tradition to the divinity school. This school once again became an independent seminary in 1998 and is now a covenant partner with CRCDS, with schools in Chicago and Columbus, Ohio. St. Bernard's School of Theology and Ministry, formerly St. Bernard's Seminary on Lake Avenue, was incorporated in 1981 as a covenant partner of CRCDS. This school of the Roman Catholic tradition was located on the CRCDS campus until it moved to its new Pittsford campus in 2003. In response to the prospect of an under-utilized campus, the Ithaca College School of Health Sciences and Human Performance (HSHP) moved to the CRCDS campus in 2006. This school, which is primarily the physical therapy program, rented space from the University of Rochester for 15 years before the suggestion was made for the move.

Conkey Cruisers

New

Parks & Nature

Conkey Cruisers is a grassroots bicycling program in the Conkey Avenue area of Group 14621. It was founded in 2012 by local resident Theresa Lou Bowick, a registered nurse. She was galvanized to action when a little boy mistook her for a parolee fleeing the police while she was out jogging. Bowick was subsequently determined to change her neighbors' perception of exercise. As luck would have it, the El Camino Trail was being completed at this time, and runs conveniently along Conkey Ave. Conkey Cruisers hosts two weekly rides in the summer. The Biking-To-Better-Health Voyage departs from Conkey Corner Park at 5:30PM every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. A later ride leaves from the same location at 6:45. The event also provides an introduction to safe bicycling and education about healthy eating. One of their goals is to win President Obama's Active Lifestyles Award.

Corbett's Glen Nature Park

New

Parks & Nature

Corbett's Glen Nature Park is a park in Brighton. Entering the park for the first time is exciting, as you walk through a historic tunnel that was constructed by the New York Central Railroad in 1882. Be aware that in 1972, Hurricane Agnes caused Allens Creek to swamp the bridge approaching the tunnel and the road in it, that Union soldiers guarded the first railroad trestle across this creek during the Civil War, and that President Abraham Lincoln's funeral train passed along these railroad tracks in 1865, on its way to Illinois. Follow Allens Creek as it tumbles over the first of three small waterfalls in the Glen. The house in front of you (now a private residence) once belonged to Patrick Corbett, who farmed the Glen and charged church and civic groups a fee to picnic along Allens Creek. Be sure to note the small set of railroad tracks surrounding the house, occasionally you may see the children of the family enjoying a ride on their small scale train. As you stroll the path along the Creek, glance to your left to search for the crater left when Parson's Powder Mill exploded in 1849. 1 Be sure to walk around the entire park. Being only 17.7 acres, it doesn't take much effort. If you are daring, hike up the cliff next to the creek for a great view. There is a new walkway going through the marsh area. We are lucky to have this park, since Linden Associates wanted to pave the area for industrial use. People of the area fought it and won. Something to (briefly) think about while you admire the park. Directions: To reach Corbett's Glen Nature Park, turn on to Glen Road from Route 441 and park before the first curve in the road. Be sure to park in the legal parking area. Walk down the road and you'll see the tunnel. Head in and explore! A separate entrance and parking area is off of Old Penfield Road which leads to wooded trails that eventually reach "the glen". Corinthian Hall

New

Education

Credit: Rochester Public Library Local History DivisionThe Corinthian Hall had been the premier lecture hall of our city. It hosted many noteworthy speakers including: Frederick Douglass, Susan B Anthony, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Dickens, William H Seward, and William Lloyd Garrison. The building was constructed in 1849 by the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics' Association, led by William A Reynolds with Henry Searle as his architect. It was originally to be known as The Athenaeum, but Reynolds chose to change its name the day before its christening to reflect the Greek Corinthian columns that were positioned on stage. The building was later renamed The Academy of Music. Fire ravaged the hall in 1898, but it managed to reopen in 1904. It was then later torn down in the year 1928. A parking area was erected in its place. We are Philistines. I concur. We should all be shot. -FarMcKon Where was this located? -RyanTucker It was located on Exchange Place, which is now known as Corinthian Street. -RobertPolyn Folks, if I can add to the misery, Corinthian Hall was the locale of the first public demonstration of the Fox Sisters and Spiritualism (the world-renowned "Rochester Rappings") in 1849. From this very place, their fame and their following, which exists to this day, were born. In July of 1851, on her tour sponsored by P.T. Barnum, the famed Swedish soprano Jenny Lind gave not one, but two concerts in Corinthian Hall, such was the crush of Rochesterians who wanted to hear her. She performed a program of bel canto, including Bellini and Donizetti, as well as an aria from Handel's Messiah and some Swedish folk songs. Barnum himself gave a lecture in the hall a few years later, with all of the proceeds going to the Female Charitable Society, an early and active women's group, founded in 1822. What it would have been to be like to be in the audience of a "Grand Vocal and Instrumental Concert" which took place in Corinthian Hall on Tuesday evening, December 26, 1854, and to hear one "H. Schenk" lead a Grand Chorus in "The German's Song" by one Kalliwoda, as well as music by Mozart, Mendelsson, Bellini and others! "An accomplished Lady Performer will preside at the Piano." A member of Jenny Lind's entourage, Henri Appy, settled here in 1866 and formed the first professional orchestra, the Philharmonic Society, which made Corinthian Hall its home. In addition to being the seed for RIT, the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics' Association's large library which Corinthian Hall housed merged with the Rochester Public in the early 1930s, significantly adding not only collections but financial resources. Until the building of the Bausch and Lomb Public Library in 1997, for instance, a good bit of the Arts/Music and Recreation Division was called the "Reynolds Audio-Visual Department." The loss of this structure is incalculable. GerrySzymanski

East Avenue Culver Road/University Avenue/East Avenue (CUE) is a mixed commercial/residential neighborhood that borders Brighton. Its three main streets - Park Avenue, East Avenue, and University Avenue - are all quite distinct from one another. The East Avenue Historic District terminates at Prober Street, at which East abruptly turns into a suburban-style commercial strip before leaving the city and resuming its historic residential character. University, meanwhile, has been revived as a funky old industrial district. Several of Rochester's hottest health clubs and restaurants are located here, mixed in with revitalized industrial buildings and a few big-box chains.
