George Eastman

George Eastman. Photo credit: Rochester Historical Society. George Eastman. George Eastman (July 12, 1854 - March 14, 1932) was an inventor, entrepreneur and businessman who founded Eastman Kodak, made motion pictures technically possible, and greatly influenced Rochester. As a young man he became interested in photography. At the time, photography was a complex endeavor, in addition to the camera, you needed a darkroom tent and a case full of chemicals to coat the glass plates to make the wet plate film. Eastman had heard about people using dry plate film, which would eliminate the need for a trunk full of chemicals, and he began to experiment with his own dry plates. The plates were still glass, and bulky and fragile. He started a business selling dry plate film, and then started researching flexible film, the photographic chemicals dried on paper. Once he developed this, he was able to make film on a roll, and market easy to use cameras. Long rolls of film were the key piece of technology to make movies. The company he started, Eastman Kodak, was Rochester's biggest employer for decades. George Eastman became very wealthy, and would donate an incredible amount of his fortune in his life and after his death. With the success of his company behind him, he built what was, at the time, the largest residence in all of Rochester. Completed in 1905, his residence at 900 East Avenue became the musical center of the city. Today, Eastman's residence is home to the George Eastman Museum, an institution preserving the home and collections of Eastman himself, along with a vast collection of objects that came into existence with his help: photographs and film. In 1924, he built Kilbourn Hall, a chamber music hall at the Eastman School of Music, and dedicated it to the memory of his mother1. In 1932, in severe arthritis pain and fearing the same fate as his mother (who spent the last years of her life in a wheelchair), he committed suicide. His suicide note read "To my friends, my work is done. Why wait? GE." BACK-TO-SCHOOL CAT ADOPTION SPECIAL!

Humane Society of Greater Rochester at Lollypop Farm, is offering a "Back-to-School” Cat Adoption Specia! l" on Friday, August 22nd, and Saturday, August 23rd. Cats can be adopted for just $50, and adopters will receive a $25 gift certificate to Target, along with “school supplies” for their kitty: food, toys, a collar and a snuggly blanket for naptime! Kittens four months old and younger can be adopted for $75. The cat adoption special is being offered as Lollypop Farm is dealing with the continued influx of unwanted cats and litters of kittens. “We aren’t able to adopt the cats and kittens as fast as they are coming in,” said Alice Calabrese Smith, President and CEO. “As our shelter becomes more crowded, it is critical that we offer as many opportunities as possible for these cats to find loving new homes.” As for the timing of the special, Smith explains, “Now is the perfect time to adopt, while the kids are still home from school. This gives the family the time they need to adjust to their new pet.” The reduced adoption fee includes the same year-round benefits, plus extra gifts for the new feline in the family: • Spaying or neutering • Feline leukemia testing • Vaccinations and parasite treatment • Certificate for a free health exam • A 30-day gift of Pet Health Insurance • Microchipping • Advantage flea control treatment • Free behavior and training advice • “Back-to-School” kit that includes: $25 gift certificate to Target (limit one per household; 60 available), a kitty collar, a 5 lb. bag of Science Diet cat food, handmade toys and a knitted kitty blanket. Angelo Buono

Musgshot - source unknown Angelo Buono Jr., along with his adoptive cousin Kenneth Bianchi were the Hillside Stranglers in 1977 and '78, taunting Los Angeles police by leaving their victims' sexually assaulted, nude bodies in grotesque poses. The victims ranged in age from 12 to 28, and the case spawned documentaries, a book and a made-for-television movie. Investigators finally cracked the case when Bianchi, looking to escape the death penalty, implicated his cousin after having been arrested in Bellingham, Wash., in 1979 in connection with another rape/strangulation case. Buono, who worked in an auto upholstery shop in which most of the victims were killed, was convicted in 1981 after a 23-month trial of nine of the 10 documented killings. He died of natural causes in California's Calipatria State Prison in September 2002. He reportedly got married in 1986 while imprisoned. Buono was born in Rochester Oct. 5, 1934 and moved to California with his family before the age of 10. Bianchi, who left the Rochester area for California in 1975, pleaded guilty to five of the California murders and was sentenced to 118 1/2 years in a Washington prison — he must serve nearly 80 years before he's eligible for parole — for his role in two other murders.
