CB Craft Brewers

CB Craft Brewers, formerly Custom BrewCrafters, was a brewery in Honeoye Falls founded in 1995. They specialized in producing beers that are sold by many regional bars and restaurants as "house beers". (The Old Toad often had their beers on tap in both keg and cask form.) CB Craft Brewers sold several under their own name. There were four beers available year-round and several seasonal/premium offerings that are periodically available. The brewery offered tastings of their brews (for a fee) throughout the week, as well as free tours of the brewery on weekends. Besides the tasting and tours, you could purchase their beers and Iron Fireman Root Beer in take home "growlers". CB Craft Brewers also operated the Pint & Goblet Tavern on-site where you can enjoy pints of their products along with a limited selection of food. Each Fall CB had their Autumn Festival of Ales which brings together representatives from the many establishments that served their beers for a big party. You could taste the different beers, participate as a judge in their chili contest (proceeds go to Mercy Flight), eat food from various vendors and listen to music. Brew Reviews Christmas Ale Surprisingly delicious. Discovered at Perinton Wegmans. Suitable choice of drink for enhancing: conversations with ex girlfriends, family gatherings, and time spent alone with the internet. Makes colors brighter and sadness more tolerable. Tastes like the holidays always should have. I could take any of you right now. Sadly this drink is only available during the Christmas season. Stock up. Goes perfectly with Oreo Cookies. Verdict: 8/10 - RobertPolyn English Pale Ale Double Dark Cream Porter A rich, smooth and almost chocolate-flavored brew, this porter is a great addition to any appetizer, entree or dessert. An Ant Hill favorite, thanks to RobertPolyn it has been our favorite way to unwind after a long day of cooperating. Indeed, we've been reduced to buying separate growlers for our greedy selves. - RossHattori See comments on the Talk page.

Critical Brisk Stroll

Critical Brisk Stroll is a new international movement with an as-of-yet-unscheduled first event to be held in Rochester. The aim of this movement is to assert the rights of pedestrians everywhere to sidewalks and crosswalks. Plans are being formed for an inaugural walk to take place within the next month, beginning at the Village Gate and ending at an as-of-yet-to-be-determined bar in the South Wedge. You are encouraged to join the mailing list here to involve yourself in the community, aid in planning, or to keep tabs on this grassroots movement for law enforcement purposes. Synopsis (draft): While the Critical Brisk Stroll movement eschews all labels, it is closest in its ideological bent to the Contemporary-Neo-Randian-Post-Malthusian-Conservative-Anarcho-Capitalistic-Classical-Socialist-Tibetan-Green movement, predicated upon the assumption of validity in the philosophies espoused by Adorno in his seminal work: Negative Dialectics. Self declared members of the movement, in a strictly binary deconstructive sense, could perhaps all be accurately described as conscientiously striving to reflect the universal class struggle as illustrated by the evolution of the C++ programming language. Borges, Akirakawa and Gins, Hitler, Alizee, Noam Chomsky, Malaysia1, and Adolf Wolfli are our mortal enemies. We, as a decentralized movement, agree that Genocide is morally abhorrent, strive for the eradication of all prime numbers, and actively fellate the patriarchy—yet, while still remaining consistent with the underlying thrust of 5th wave feminism—and in turn necessessarily loathe even so much as a mention of evenly numbered denominations of currency. Critical Brisk Stroll is both the ineffable and Critical Brisk Stroll. We are as strictly regimented as an MLA formatted document and as flexible as the truth. We are the voice of reason—with footnotes. We are the innocent, blind, oppressed, and pure. We are the voice of the working class. We are pedestrians. It was independently conceived, having nothing to do with Critical Mass, despite any similarities in concept or name or reality.

AndreaCogliati/Reviews/The Grill at Strathallan

The Grill at Strathallan Hotel Chef de Cuisine: Ethan Drake Souf Chef: Jeff Yaniak 550 East Avenue Rochester, NY 14607 (585) 454-1880 (800) 678-7284 http://www.strathallan.com/dining.php RocWiki main page Visited on January 26, 2008 at 8:00 pm The restaurant, AAA's Four Diamonds and Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, provides standard American fare in a nice ambiance. Live music, performed in the bar but easily heard in the dining room, is a plus if you don't want to talk too much to table guests. Ambiance The hotel was undergoing some renovations at the time of our visit so we expect some improvements in the future. At the moment, you enter the bar through a temporary, narrow passage behind some wood panels, not really a nice welcome! The bar was full of patrons waiting for the music band performing live music and we had a hard time slaloming through the tables and chairs. The dining room is ample and there is enough space between the tables, so you are not bothered by other clients' conversations. The illumination is provided by some bright spotlights that give a low and suffused light with some excessive glares. We've seen patrons asking to be reseated because of direct light beam in the face. The tables are covered by white table cloths; glassware and silverware are of average quality for the class of the restaurant. Menu The cuisine is standard North American fare. The menu offers a good selection of both seafood and meat dishes. There is also a small selection of vegetarian fares. Flatbreads are also offered, which is not quite in line with the class of the restaurant. Entrees ranges from $21 to $32, while appetizers are in $12-$16 range. Wine List The wine list, sporting over 1,100 wines, is the largest in Rochester. It focuses on Californian, French and Italian wines with both big names and small wine makers. There's a good selection of Champagnes. There are a few wines from the rest of the US (just a couple of entries from NY state though) and from other world regions (Chile, Australia and South Africa). Prices are excellent, even for older vintages. The list is ordered by varietal and divided by broad world regions, which leads to some difficulties if you look for specific regions or wineries. Wines by the glass are also offered, but there is no list for them. Meal We started with a glass of Champagne (unnamed but good) to accompany our appetizers. Calamari Tuscan style calamari in sautéed garlic, shallots, capers, tomatoes and white wine. $12 Having lived in Tuscany for almost 7 years I have to confess I've never eaten this recipe or something similar (and I traveled and ate a lot!), so it's probably an apocrypha, or what the chef thinks they eat in Tuscany. The result what very good anyway, with just too many capers which covered the rest of the flavors. Score: 13/20 Brie Wellington Soft brie, duxelle and spinach wrapped in puff pastry topped with honeycomb and petit baby green salad. $12 Very good but probably too much for an appetizer: I would have been satisfied by a third of it or so. Cheese and honey is nothing really new and so is grilling the cheese. But the idea of putting together the grilled cheese with vegetables and honey in a small cake is a small jewel. Score: 14.5/20 1998 Clos de Vougeot, Chateau de la Tour (Bourgogne, France) We opted for a wonderful 1998 Clos de Vougeot, Chateau de la Tour to continue or meal. Still young but definitely wonderful, with lots of red berries and flowers and no foul scents, typical of red burgundy (even expensive ones). A bargain at $95 Cranberry Tenderloin Tournedos of beef tenderloin finished with port wine, cranberries, crumbled blue cheese and seasonal sautéed vegetables. $32 The meat is provided by Wolfe's Neck Farm, which produces naturally raised choice beef with no antibiotics, growth hormones and no animal by-products, and was excellent indeed and cooked to perfection. The dish is nothing very creative and the crumbled blue cheese was not very well integrated into the rest: I would have preferred a blue cheese sauce or a blue cheese flan, for instance. Score: 12.5/20 Slow Roasted Elk Medallions Potato pudding, chanterelle sauté and hunter sauce. $27 Nothing really innovative but absolutely marvelous, easily the best dish of the night. Score: 15/20 Chocolate Pate Layered chocolate marble with strawberries, whipped cream and fudge. $9 It tasted good but it was a little bit too hard and the result texture not pleasant to eat. Score: 10.5/20 Service Excellent service, although not very formal: some minor flaws, like putting down the bottle on the table while I was tasting the wine and serving the food from the wrong side; although the class of the restaurant doesn't really require such attention to these details. We also asked for some little favors like the permission to take pictures of the dishes and a copy of the menu to keep and we've been always gladly obliged. Just as a small low point, the waitress assigned to clear the tables was chewing a gum: definitely incompatible with the restaurant. Price The bill totaled to $205, before taxes, including $18 for 2 cups of Champagne. Not too much, considering the quality of the products. Pros Very good raw products and solid cooking techniques with some creativity. Ample wine list, especially for California lovers. Live music, if you like it. Cons Bad illumination. Live music can be bothersome if you want to talk to your peers. Credits Many thanks to RichChiavaroli for digitally retouching the pictures. Review by AndreaCogliati

Mario's Pasta and Pizza

'Mario's Pasta and Pizza' was an Italian family restaurant owned and operated by the Daniele family at 1749 East Avenue in Rochester NY, directly across from Wegmans Food Pharmacy. Proprietor Mario Daniele opened its doors in 1979. Sometime around the turn of the millennium, the Daniele family relocated the business to Monroe Avenue near the 590 North interchange, renaming the sprawling establishment, 'Mario's Via Abruzzi'. It closed in 2015, and was succeeded briefly by 'Mario’s Homemade Pasta Kitchen' at the site of the former Bazil - Daniele's son's restaurant - on Empire Boulevard in Webster until it closed it's doors in 2018 when Daniele decided to retire. The site was razed and quickly transformed into a thriving upscale Marina apartment housing complex known as 'The Bellagio'. The Mario's restaurants were a highly respected and much-loved set of culinary establishments that served the Rochester community for nearly half a century.

Cooperatives

In an economic sense, a cooperative is a business controlled by those it affects (informally, it's stake holders). A worker cooperative is a business owned by its workers; a housing cooperative is a house owned by its residence; a retail cooperative can be worker cooperative, or a business owned by its customers, or a combination. Cooperatives eliminate control of an organisation by those who are only interested in a profit. Socially, a cooperative usually involves cooperation in the traditional sense, and a vibrant, do-it-yourself attitude towards pitching in and getting the job done. Rochester has several cooperatives of various kinds: Art Co-ops Dichotomy Rochester Genesee Center for the Arts and Education (Community Darkroom) NU MVMNT The Shoe Factory Art Co-op Consumer Food Cooperatives Abundance Cooperative Market / Genesee Co-op Natural Foodstore Genesee Valley Community Supported Agriculture Greater Rochester Urban Bounty (GRUB) Energy Cooperatives Rochester District Heating Co-op - A downtown steam co-op! Corn Hill Grill

Corn Hill Grill was a restaurant located on Exchange Boulevard downtown. Hot sandwiches (roasted turkey, meatloaf, grilled cheese) and classic American (chicken pot pie, mac and cheese, spaghetti and meatballs) dominated the Corn Hill Grill menu, with a few meal-sized salads thrown in as well. A spattering of appetizers (shrimp cakes, potato latkes) and a half-dozen meat-centric entrees (braised short ribs, stuffed chicken) kicked into gear at dinner service. Awards Corn Hill Grill's macaroni and cheese was awarded "Best Upscale Comfort Food" in City Newspaper's 'Best of Rochester' Critics' Picks Awards in 2009.1

Druk Spices Grocery Store

Druk Spices Grocery Store is a Nepalese shop in Brown Square. Its name derives from a popular Bhutanese brand. Items for sale include noodles, flour, beans, spices, snacks, and hard-to-find Asian foods. They stock little produce, as most of their Nepalese clientele have their own gardens. At present, the back of the store is being converted to a small cafe offering Himalayan cuisine. Owner Suk Subba arrived in the United States in 2009. He is one of 2,000 ethnic Nepalese who fled Bhutan and now live in Rochester. During his time in the Nepalese refugee camps he ran a small grocery stall but was unable to obtain a license due to his non-citizen status. Flour City Pasta

Former location of Flour City Pasta (Perinton) Former location of Flour City Pasta (Perinton) Flour City Pasta is a bakery that specializes in organic handmade pasta, including gluten-free varieties. In 2012 the owners opened a retail store in Pittsford, which they closed in September 2014 to focus on expanding flavors and distribution. Their products can be purchased at: F. Oliver's Oils and Vinegars Lori's Natural Foods Parkleigh Pittsford Farms Dairy & Bakery R's Market Red Bird Market Schutt's Apple Mill and other regional locations. Controversy In October 2015 Flour City Bread Co. announced that Flour City Pasta was threatening them with legal action over their use of the name "Flour City," which Flour City Pasta says infringes on their trademark within their product category. Flour City Pasta, on the other hand, argued on their Facebook page that "One of the requirements of having a trademark is making sure that other people don’t use our name in our product category. Our category is food products. It’s called 'policing the mark'. It’s designed to protect the public." The bread folks pointed out that Flour City has been a Rochester nickname for over 150 years and some 60 businesses since then have used it. Flour City Pasta countered that "No one, least of all us, has a monopoly on the name Flour City. Anyone who claims that we are trying to make money by controlling the name 'Flour City' is misinformed."
