Their coverage options include replacement cost for dwellings, personal property protection, and liability coverage. They also handle business insurance. Spectrum (Charter Communications)

Spectrum is the cable internet provider with the widest coverage in the Rochester area, reaching approximately 94.6% of the city and extending through most suburbs. If Greenlight Networks isn't available at your address yet, Spectrum is the reliable fallback. Plans start at $30/month with no contracts and no data caps. Speeds reach up to 2 Gbps on their highest tier, though cable internet does share bandwidth across neighborhoods, which can mean slower speeds during peak evening hours compared to dedicated fiber. Spectrum also offers TV, phone, and mobile bundles. For many Rochester residents, the setup is: try Greenlight first, fall back to Spectrum if fiber isn't on your street yet, and switch when it arrives. Website: spectrum.com

Hallmark Properties NY is a smaller local brokerage that stands out for their detailed, neighborhood-by-neighborhood buyer guides covering Monroe, Ontario, Wayne, and Orleans counties. Their website includes factual guides for Brighton, Greece, Webster, Pittsford, Penfield, Fairport, Henrietta, Irondequoit, and many more — each with school district info, tax boundaries, and links to official resources. For someone doing pre-move research, Hallmark's neighborhood guides are a practical, no-nonsense resource. They take a factual, non-salesy approach: they provide information and let you make your own decisions about fit. Website: hallmarkpropertiesny.com

Greenlight Networks

Greenlight Networks is Rochester's homegrown fiber-optic internet provider, founded locally in 2011 and now serving over 100,000 homes and businesses. They were rated the #1 internet service provider in the country by Consumer Reports in 2024, and they consistently earn near-perfect customer satisfaction scores. Greenlight builds and owns its own fiber network street by street — no shared bandwidth, no speed degradation during peak hours, symmetrical upload and download speeds. Plans start at $55/month with no contracts, no hidden fees, and no data caps. Speeds range up to 5 Gbps for residential customers. The catch: availability is address-specific. Greenlight is expanding constantly but doesn't cover every street yet. Check greenlightnetworks.com to see if your new address is lit. If it's not, you can register to be notified when construction reaches your block. Most homes can be connected within 3–5 business days of scheduling installation. For remote workers, Greenlight's symmetrical fiber is usually the first choice when the address qualifies. Phone: (585) 351-6600 | Website: greenlightnetworks.com

The Elmwood Agency

As an independent agency, they're not locked into a single carrier — they shop across multiple insurance companies to find the best fit for your situation. They handle homeowners, auto, motorcycle, boat, and RV insurance. What makes them useful for relocators is that their services extend beyond insurance: they can assist with realtor referrals, mortgage application guidance, and neighborhood comparisons — essentially helping you with the full home-buying ecosystem, not just the policy. Website: elmwoodagency.com | Phone: (585) 548-4500

The History of Rochester Following the American Revolution, western New York was opened up for development as soon as New York and Massachusetts compromised and settled their competing claims for the area in December 1786 by the Treaty of Hartford. The compromise was that, while New York would have sovereignty over the land, Massachusetts would have pre-emptive rights to obtain title from the Indians. On April 1, 1788, after extensive machinations by various speculators, Massachusetts' pre-emptive right over all western New York Lands — comprising some 6,000,000 acres (24,000 km²) — was sold to Oliver Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham, both of Massachusetts. The sales price was $1,000,000, payable in three equal annual installments of certain Massachusetts securities then worth about 20 cents on the dollar. The right sold applied to all land west of a line running from the mouth of Sodus Bay on Lake Ontario, due south through Seneca Lake, to the 82nd milestone on the Pennsylvania border near Big Flats (the "Pre-emption Line"), and all the way to the Niagara River and Lake Erie (the "Phelps and Gorham Purchase"). In order to obtain title to such land, Phelps and Gorham would have to extinguish all Indian titles. Due to a failure to extinguish the Indian titles as well as a default in the 1790 payment, the pre-emptive rights to remaining lands of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase west of the Genesee River, comprising some 3,750,000 acres (15,000 km²), reverted back to Massachusetts. The state then re-sold those rights to Robert Morris in 1791 for $333,333.33. In 1792 and 1793, Morris then sold most of the lands west of the Genesee to the Holland Land Company, but he did not extinguish Indian title to the land until the Treaty of Big Tree in September, 1797. Morris reserved for himself a 500,000 acre (2,000 km²) strip approximately 12 miles wide and extending from Lake Ontario to the Pennsylvania border along the eastern edge of the Holland Purchase, known as the Morris Reserve. At the north end of the Reserve, an 87,000 acre (350 km²) triangular shaped tract ("The Triangle Tract") was sold by Morris to Herman Leroy, William Bayard and John McEvers, while a 100,000 tract due west of the Triangle Tract was sold to the state of Connecticut. Additional Phelps and Gorham lands east of the Genesee River which had not previously been sold were acquired by Robert Morris in 1791, who re-sold them to the The Pulteney Association, a syndicate of British investors. Shortly after concluding the purchase, Phelps and Gorham gave a 100 acre (0.4 km²) lot within the Mill Yard Tract at the Upper Falls of the Genesee to Ebenezer "Indian" Allen, on condition he build a grist mill and sawmill there by summer 1789 (the "100 Acre Tract"). In exchange for the 100 Acre Tract, Allen built the agreed-upon mills at the west end of the Upper Falls of the Genesee. But the location was so deep in the wilderness that there were only 14 men in the area to assist in the mill's construction. The area was a dense forest and swamp, and infested with rattlesnakes and mosquitoes that spread 'Swamp Fever' or what we now call malaria. In March 1792, with no settlers and no demand for mills, Indian Allen sold the 100 Acre Tract to Benjamin Barton, Sr. of New Jersey for $1,250. Barton almost immediately resold the property to Samuel Ogden, an agent for Robert Morris. Ogden, in turn, sold the property in 1794 to Charles Williamson, agent for The Pulteney Association. On November 8, 1803, The Pulteney Association leased the 100 Acre Tract for $1,750, on a five-year land contract, to Col. Nathaniel Rochester(1752-1831), Maj. Charles Carroll, and Col. William Fitzhugh, all of Hagerstown, Maryland. Badfish Ben Munson yo yo yo its me homeslize Welcome to Rocwiki John! Please be aware this should be a page about YOU. KitchenNotes

Notes from the 9/15 kitchen meeting: The basic consensus among the group tha tmet was that foodshare has had difficulties growing from the small scale of the summer to the large scale it runs at currently. Specifically, current operations have been draining the bank account to nearly nothing, whereas we had been running a surplus over the summer. To fix this, and set a framework for better financial control in the future, we will be implementing much stricter adherence to the currently written rules, which we have been following only loosely up until now. Here's the notes from the meeting, typed up in a nice format. Finances Current bank account isn't precisely known due to reciept reimbursement, but its very low. I'd estimate ~100$ or less. Currently we have 11 full foodshare members (9 residential, 2 general), and 2 frequent members who are paying per meal Estimate of ~1450$ income/month. (120*11+2*3*(5/7)*30)=1448.57. Earmark 300$/week for food and food and expendable supplies (sponges, paper towels, etc.) Earmark 100$/month for non-expendable, non-food supplies—either permanent supplies (buying new pots and pans) or replacement supplies (replace broken glasses, plates, etc.) Total of ~1386 spent/month. Leaving us with ~65$ going into the account per month + guest fees. (This is slightly off from the amount in the meeting since we neglected to account for only 5 days a week of guest meals.) Kitchen Organization According to the chore descriptions, the kitchen is to be precleaned by 6 PM, with the dinner being prepared by 7:30 PM. We've drifted away from this. Please re-read the descriptions of chores, and try to aim for 7:30 as dinner time. A chore position will be created to take a kitchen inventory of food supplies. The KM (Kitchen Manager) will be responsible for keeping a copy of that inventory and using it when deciding what needs to be purchased each week. Cooks must provide the KM with a menu and a list of ingredients (including the amount needed) by Friday, 5 PM of the week prior, or they will not be reimbursed for purchase of the supplies. This is required because the scope of the current Foodshare is too great to have constant reimbursement of reciepts. Instead, we will have only the scheduled shopping trips each week, so the shoppers heading out Saturday morning need to know what to buy. There will be no official lunch option. Instead, residents are encouraged to create a voluntary lunch-share, and will organize cooking amongst themselves for members of that lunch-share, using Foodshare supplies. Far will be posting a list of Kitchen Manager responsibilities to the mailing list. Read and comment at your leisure. Cooks will be responsible for keeping a tally of How many people have come to dinner The names of non-foodshare members (who thus owe 3$) present This will be provided to the kitchen manager after the dinner, by a yet-to-be-determined method (probably a board in the kitchen) Shoppers are responsible for buying everything on the list (with discretion if something's too expensive) and anything else that fits within what the Kitchen Manager's alotted them (again, using discretion). The list will include meal dates along with the needed ingredients, and the shoppers should package and date the items as best they can so that people using the kitchen will know what ingredients are marked for dinner use on what dates. When purchasing, shoppers may either request cash ahead of time from the Kitchen Manager, or may use their own funds to purchase foods. If using the KM's cash, they will return the unused portion and reciepts immediately after shopping. If using their own funds, they will provide the KM with a reciept within 24 hours of finishing shopping and will recieve a check for the indicated amount. Users of the kitchen are not to use anything that's dated for dinner until that date has passed. Then its free for use by all foodshare members. Renovations and Long Term Supply Purchasing Non-food long-term items will be either purchased from the 100$/month supply fund (sub-set of the foodshare fund), or from the Development Fund (after a proposal is submitted and approved). Exact organization of this is yet-to-be-decided, but the 100$/month is already allocated. The pantry (i.e. Ross's old room) will hopefully be in use by the month's end. We should all get together one day (this weekend?) to help haul the really big stuff out of the room. We'll talk to David and David about getting a fridge from the warehouse to use in our pantry.

Free Culture Coalition/Manifesto

The mission of the Free Culture movement is to build a bottom-up, participatory structure to society and culture, rather than a top-down, closed, proprietary structure. Through the democratizing power of digital technology and the internet, we can place the tools of creation and distribution, communication and collaboration, teaching and learning into the hands of the common person — and with a truly active, connected, informed citizenry, injustice and oppression will slowly but surely vanish from the earth. We believe that culture is a two-way affair, about participation, not merely consumption. We will not be content to sit passively at the end of a one-way media tube and buy things until we look like the people on Friends. With the Internet and other advances, the technology exists for a new paradigm of creation, one where anyone can be an artist, and anyone can succeed, based not on their industry connections, but on their merit. We refuse to accept a future of digital feudalism where we do not actually own the products we buy, but we are merely granted limited uses of them as long as we pay the rent. We must halt and reverse the recent radical expansion of "intellectual property rights", which threaten to reach the point where they trump any and all other rights of the individual and society. The freedom to build upon the past is necessary for creativity and innovation to thrive. We will use and promote our cultural heritage in the public domain. We will make, share, adapt, and promote Open Content. We will listen to Free Music, look at Free Art, watch Free Film, and read Free Books. All the while, we will discuss, annotate, improve, improvise, remix, mutate, and throw yet more ingredients into the Free Culture soup. We will fight to make everyone understand the value of our common wealth, evangelizing for Linux and the open-source model. We will resist repressive legislation which threatens our civil liberties and stifles innovation, such as the Digital Millenium Copyright Act and the proposed Induce Act. We will organize to prevent Microsoft and others from pushing through hardware-level monitoring devices that will prevent users from having control of their own machines and their own data. We won't allow the RIAA and the MPAA to cling to obsolete modes of distribution through bad legislation and market dominance. We will be active participants in a free culture of connectivity and production, made possible as it never was before by the Internet and digital technology, and we will fight to prevent this new potential from being locked down by corporate and legislative control. If we allow the bottom-up, participatory structure of the Internet to be twisted into a glorified cable TV service — if we allow the established paradigm of creation and distribution to reassert itself — then the window of opportunity opened by the Internet will have been closed, and we will have lost something beautiful, revolutionary, and irretrievable. The future is in our hands; we must build a technological and cultural movement to defend the digital commons. Version 1.2
