Family Dollar Arsons

The Family Dollar Arsons refers to the fires set at two Family Dollars in the city's Northeast Quadrant. The first occurred at Goodman Plaza, on the border between the Marketview Heights and Beechwood neighborhoods. This one was put out quickly. The second in Group 14621's Ridge-Clinton Plaza, however, turned into one of the biggest blazes in Rochester history. It was quickly upgraded to a four-alarm fire, requiring the efforts of fifteen RFD companies and two more from the suburbs. Luckily, no firefighters or civilians were injured, although $3 million worth of damage was suffered by the Family Dollar, a Salvatore's, and cell phone shop. Rondell Flowers, a former Family Dollar employee, was confessed to the crime and was convicted in 2011. Andrea Geer Designs

Andrea Geer Designs is the boutique and studio of local designer Andrea Geer. She specializes in hand-loomed knitwear and is a regular participant in Fashion Week of Rochester. Andrea Geer is located in the Village Gate. In her own words As an artist and designer I am fascinated by color, form and movement. I receive great enjoyment from seeing my creations as functional pieces of art. The knit fabrics move, flow and change depending on who is wearing them and how. Clothing can be a powerful statement and this body of work represents an approach to knitwear that is direct and organic. Pieces are hand loomed and manipulated to create fabrics that address and articulate my artistic goals. Yarns made from merino wool, linen and cotton are used to create clothing that enhances the beauty and individuality of the wearer. I create the buttons and pins to enhance the overall design. This step-by-step process allows me to create one of a kind as well as limited production pieces.

Friends Helping Friends

Friends Helping Friends does a tremendous amount to help our community. Friends Helping Friends coordinates a thrift store and food cupboard at 333 Child Street. The store is open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm seven days a week. In addition, FHF runs a free bike shop at 226-230 Hudson Avenue where FHF receives old bikes, repairs them and gives them away to schools, as well as civic and faith communities. We would love to have volunteers, groups of volunteers or people's old bikes. We also received the donation of a residential property at 30 Mark Street that we've almost fully renovated; 3 of us live there now. Friends Helping Friends was previously known to the Rochester area as part of the national Food Not Bombs organization, of which Rochester Food Not Bombs is affiliated. However, feeling that the strong anti-war stance associated with the name "Food Not Bombs" misrepresented the organization, we have changed their name while still staying in touch with the Food Not Bombs movement. Most people involved with Friends Helping Friends are against war; since fighting militarism is not part of our regular activities, we do not want a deceptive name. FHF has taken up unpopular causes related to delivering our mission that has cost us funding. The goal of Friends Helping Friends is stated as: To foster multi-cultural collaborations focusing on distributing food products and supplies to those in need. Official Site
