Description
General Jacob Gould was Rochester, NY's second mayor, and the first from the Democratic party. He was in office from 1835 to 1836, and was succeeded by Abraham M. Schermerhorn. Gould was the first president of the Rochester City Bank. He had a house built in 1825 on the northwest corner of Spring Street and South Fitzhugh Street. The house was razed in the 1950s. Gould is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery and was one of the first to buy a plot even though he fought to stop the city from acquiring the land for the cemetery.
