Description
Philip Barry was a Rochester-born (1896) playwright active from the 1920s to the late 1940s. He is perhaps best known for the 1939 play, Philadelphia Story, which became a popular 1940 film. Barry specialized in comedies, often about the upper class, but also wrote some dramas. Many of Barry's plays were adapted for the (then) new medium, television. Philip Barry was born in Rochester on June 18, 1896, and he died in New York City in December of 1949. His last play, Second Threshold, was unfinished and was then completed by Robert Sherwood and produced in 1951.
