Little Theatre

The Little Theatre Interior, Little 2 in the back, 2-2008 Back lobby for theaters 2 thru 5, 12-2008 The Little Theatre (sometimes referred to as The Little Theater), located in the East End, is Rochester's best known (and many say best loved) venue for independent and art house movies, live music and art exhibits. The original Little Theatre (Little #1) was the fifth cinema created in a small chain during the "little cinema movement," which was dedicated to showing "art films that appeal to the intelligent and sophisticated" in the 1920's. These theaters were built in response to the mass merchandising and the construction of huge 'movie palaces', which became popular in the 1920's. In May 1982, William Coppard and John and Pam Blanpied bought the Little in order to refurbish it and bring it back to its former Art Deco glory. By 1996, the Little had grown to a complex of five theaters. The original Little faces East Avenue. The remaining four theaters are housed in a complex facing Winthrop Street immediately behind the original theater. In 1999, The Little was granted 501(c)3 status as a not-for-profit organization under the name of The Little Theatre Film Society, Inc. A large part of the theatre's financial support comes from memberships, grants and donations. On December 19, 2011, it was announced that The Little would be merging with WXXI. The theaters offer popcorn with real butter and treats from the Little Cafe. The cafe is housed in same building as the newer theaters, and presents live music, ranging from jazz to acoustic, five nights a week. The cafe is also home to monthly art exhibits showcasing some of Rochester's finest local artists. Admittance for music and art is generally free of charge. They also offer fresh baked goods, coffee and Snapple. It provides a relaxed atmosphere and can be a nice "date night" for an alternative to the mall cinemas. The Little has been voted Rochester's BEST MOVIE THEATRE multiple times in City Newspaper's BEST OF ROCHESTER poll, as well as BEST PLACE FOR A FIRST DATE. In the past The Little has run The Preferred Care Little Buddies Series, which offered a family friendly film and pre-show fun and educational event. It also has presented the Emerging Filmakers Series, a collection of short films by local and statewide filmmakers. There also have been series focused on documentaries. In recent years the Little #1 has been a venue for the Rochester International Jazz Festival. Recently the theatre has been showing classic films in 35mm once a month as part of it's Saturday Night Rewind series. The theatre is also a host venue for many community film festivals including The Rochester High Falls International Film Festival, ImageOut, The Rochester Jewish Film Festival, the Polish Film Festival and the Dance on Camera Film Festival, as well as their own Little Foreign Film Festival. Limited parking is available at the Winthrop Street location. Free parking is also available at a nearby parking lot. The East End Garage is not far away. During the academic year, the club meets on Monday and Thursday nights at Java Wally's, the coffee shop in the library at RIT. Full sets donated by the Ing Foundation are stored near the counter. Deli Sandros

Deli Sandros was RocWiki's Business Spotlight of the Month for February 2014! Deli Sandros was a deli in Plymouth-Exchange that offered subs, sandwiches, and salads to order, along with a selection of Finger Lakes coffee, ice cream, and a Garbage Plate Dogwich. They were one of only two delis in Rochester that offer cold cuts from Thurmann's. They were primarily a take-out place, although there was limited seating, along with free WiFi, USB surge protected outlets, and phone charging stations. They also did catering. During the academic year Deli Sandros did late-night delivery to the UR River Campus, Upper Mount Hope, Brooks Landing, the South Wedge and throughout Plymouth-Exchange and nearby areas. They purchased a limousine from a nearby funeral home for this purpose. Deli Sandros was located almost right across the street from UR's Riverview dorms. They accepted Flex/UROS account payment from UR student ID cards. They opened for business on September 7, 2012. Owner was Anthony D'Alessandro. He is open to suggestions on the Location19.org discussion thread. The owner of both buildings is D'Alessandro House Buyers, run by Anthony's brother Joe. Clarissa Room

The Clarissa Room is a jazz bar on Clarissa Street. Message on website as of 2007.01.23 says "The Clarissa Room is currently closed due to legal matters within the family". There is hope for the venue, as it will be reopening as Clarissa's as soon as it gets its liquor license. Update: A soft opening for friends and family was held on the weekend of 11/10/2007. Simply put, it’s hard to get over Shep’s. It was of those completely unforgettable clubs with fantastic ambience, crowds and music. John Starr (RIP) did an excellent job with the space and always made his customers welcome. That feeling actually has never left. It’s always been a place that is very welcoming, regardless of who owns it. However, I have to say that I prefer the old set-up with the bar and seating downstairs and the “stage” and additional seating upstairs. It really gave you the option of 2 separate spaces to use. Yes there’s the seating in the upper back section now, but it always makes me feel too disconnected back there. Regardless it’s a great resource for our community and I always have a good time when I go. — While the post was on the level then, there was no re-opening during February. Jazz@Rochester has since been told that John Starr's children have not been able to overcome the legal hurdles to reopen and that Clarissa Room will not be re-opened and that the building in fact will be put up for sale. blog will have more news the information is confirmed. I would welcome those who know the real story to contact me on the blog. There's a lot of people out there who miss this venue. — I've been seeing a number of hits on my blog from this page, indicating continued interest in the Clarissa Room and its fate. Currently, we have heard that the Clarissa Room will be re-opening as soon as their liquor license is in place. From what I heard, it will be under new ownership and management. Again, I would welcome those who know the whole story to contact me through the email link on Jazz@Rochester. There's a lot of people out there who miss this venue and I'd like to let them know what's up and when to expect the Clarissa Room to return. —

Eastview Mall

Looking into the food court, 10-2008 Eastview is Rochester's most upscale mall, but those from much larger cities would be unimpressed by the more mid-market store selection. Eastview is home to 5 department stores (Lord & Taylor, Macy's, JC Penney, Sears, and Bon-Ton) and many more stores for every member of the family. Some notable stores unique to the Rochester market and all of upstate NY include Aldo, Ann Taylor, Apple, Arden B, Arhaus, Bombay, Cache, Clarks, Coach, Eddie Bauer, Forever 21, Godiva, Janie and Jack, J Crew, Jessica Mcclintock, Johnston and Murphy, Lindt, Pottery Barn, Sephora, Solstice, Swarovski, White House/Black Market, Williams Sonoma, and The Walking Company. Check out the store directory for a complete listing of all the stores. LL Bean will open in 2009. Eastview also features several full-service restaurants: Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano, Bonefish Grill, Champps Americana, and PF Changs Chinese Bistro. Eastview is located just over the Monroe County line in the Town of Victor. Supposedly, it was originally planned to be built in the Town of Perinton, but Perinton officials rather sensibly balked at the increased traffic and commercial sprawl that a regional mall brings. Victor officials were only too happy (at the time) to accept the consequences, and now Ontario County rakes in the sales tax revenue from tens of thousands of Monroe County residents making their purchases at Eastview and surrounding retail offerings.

Elmwood Inn

Elmwood Inn! Elmwood Inn is a little bar/restaurant in the Lilac Neighborhood, near the University of Rochester campus and Mt. Hope Cemetery. It has a college/sports atmosphere, with good, reasonably-priced food, and a good selection (about forty) brews and microbrews on tap1. An under-appreciated, but supremely bad-ass feature: side-by-side dartboards allowing head-to-head play, with a television display. That is, two people can play each other in a number of timed or untimed games, each with their own board. Ponder this feat of awesomeness.

Hillside Cafe

Hillside Cafe, located in the Susan B. Anthony Residence Hall at the University of Rochester is one of many dining options offered to students. This cafe provides University of Rochester students with a late night dining option, staying open until 2am. To satisfy ones sweet tooth, there is a Hershey's ice cream bar that students can pay for on their meal plans.
