FIGHT

FIGHT — Freedom, Independence, God, Honor, Today — was a community organization formed in the aftermath of Rochester's 1964 riots. It successfully agitated for change, taking on hiring practices, living conditions and other critical issues. FIGHT leaders were also credited with stopping additional civil unrest when rioting hit other northern cities in the mid-1960s. The Rev. Franklin D. Florence, raised in the south and a friend of Malcolm X, was in his late 20s and early 30s at the time and became the face and voice of the organization. He worked closely with Saul Alinsky, the controversial social activist and was FIGHT's first president in 1965. Florence showed up at the Kodak shareholders meeting in New Jersey in 1967 and threatened to hold a midnight march on Kodak's Rochester offices on the anniversary of Rochester's riots. That forced Kodak to the table to initiate a recruitment and training program for the black community.

Binghamton

Binghamton is a city in the eastern most extent of the Southern Tier of New York and the lower right-hand corner of the Western Tier of New York. At the crossroads of the Southern Tier Expressway (NY Route 17) and Interstates 81 and 88, it serves as one of the principal gateways to western New York. The city competes with upstate New York cities - Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse and ? Albany? - for the The Golden Snowball Award. It is very easy to get from Rochester to Binghamton. Get on I-390 and head south. When that road ends, go east on I-86/NY 17, and, sooner or later, you'll get there. As for what to do when you get there: See the Binghamton Mets (baseball) or Binghamton Senators (hockey) play Try a Spiedie In August go to the SpiedieFest and Balloon Rally Binghamton now has a city wiki as well, found at www.BingWiki.org. The wiki is on RocWiki's interwiki map and can be linked to directly as BingWiki. See their Rochester page or link to it using: [wiki:BingWiki:Rochester,_NY Rochester]

Commuting by Road, Rail or Air

I do a lot of travelling between NYC and ROC. Used to work over here but have since started a job in NYC. Work there during the week and come home on the weekends. Some sanity compared to NYC.I have noticed though a lot of people tend to do the same. I take Jet Blue - a quick 1 hour trip. Sometimes I drive - a not so quick 6 hour trip. I get the impression that I'm not alone on this weekly trek. How many others are there? Tips? Hints? Routes? Anything interesting to say? See Also: How To Get To Rochester

Fuzzy Pipe Cleaner

Fuzzy pipe cleaners in action. Source: Bob.Fornal The fuzzy pipe cleaner, perhaps the most ubiquitous of all children's arts and crafts materials, was invented in Rochester by John Harry Stedman who is interred in Mt. Hope Cemetery. And yes, it was originally intended for cleaning pipes. It was one of the inventions that made Stedman a wealthy and prominent resident of his day. John Harry Stedman

John Harry Stedman (b. 1843, d. 1922) invented such wondrous marvels as the fuzzy pipe cleaner and the streetcar transfer ticket in 18921. He sold the pipe cleaner rights to BJLong Company which still makes them today, and that made him a wealthy man. In 1913, he re-introduced the custom of placing a lit candle in windows for Christmas. Interred at Mt. Hope Cemetery, the best source for more information is Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery, which published a brief biography in the Volume 3, Number 1 (Spring 1983) issue of Epitaph, their newsletter. Jim 'The Hammer' Shapiro

The Hammer Jim 'The Hammer' Shapiro may one day prove to be the greatest man to have ever walked the streets of our fair and humble city1. That he was found guilty of false advertising, malpractice, and was ultimately suspended for related offenses amounts to little more than a collection of trivial details in the face of the greater truth of his story: Jim 'The Hammer' Shapiro brought light and hope to untold thousands through the sublime radiance of his manic zeal, broadcast out to the citizens of Rochester on a daily basis to change their lives forever through an expanded apprecition of the nuance, depth, and spiritual catharsis made possible through local television advertisement. Community Activities

Try the Events Board instead Original page Okay, people. Here's my brilliant idea. This page should list various activities that are open to all and which originate by means of RocWiki community members. This is different from external links that lead you to community organizations. Those require membership and are too much trouble for people like me (as nice as those people may or may not be). For example: last weekend was a beautiful weekend. I played tennis with friends at Cobbs Hill. If I would have posted this perhaps more people would have shown up and doubles could have happened. Now that I think about it, why are there not informal tennis, softball, frisbee, etc. leagues? Even my little neighborhood organization can manage that. Another example: my friends cheat at boardgames and the cat is a terrible referee. "Potluck" also involves me cooking more than anyone else. Are people open to this idea? Comment away and maybe someone with more knowledge and experience can guide us in the right direction.

Deer

White-tailed buck There is a large population of deer in the Rochester area. During the fall mating and migration season, motorists must be very alert for deer in the roads. Over the course of a year, deer-vehicle accidents can account for more than a third of all accidents in the county. Local farmers also claim to lose anywhere from 30 to 80% of their crops due to damage from deer.1 Deer can be hunted with both bow and gun in Monroe County. In 2008, bow season is from October 18 to November 14, and again from December 8 to December 16. Gun season extends from November 15 to December 7.2 The total reported number of deer hunted by year: Rochester is also home to the legend of the Ghost Deer. 1Democrat & Chronicle. 2005-11-13 no longer accessible2http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/07nyhunttrapver1.3biggame.pdf3http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/12590.html4http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/42247.html

Legal Wall

Warning posted by Stern Properties in March of 2007. The Legal Wall is located behind The Village Gate. To find it, follow the train tracks behind the parking lot, look to your right, and you will be treated to some of the best graffiti in the area. The artwork is spread across several walls belonging to a row of aging buildings used primarily now as art studios. The name 'Legal Wall' stemmed from the landlord of this property having allowed its walls to be used for graffiti, so long as artists didn't draw beyond their limits onto other nearby properties. The appearance of this location changed dramatically over time, with new artists spraying over older creations on a regular basis, and as such it is well worth revisiting. As of March 2008, this area is no longer considered a legal wall, as fencing and cameras have been installed. The reason for the change has been given as vandalism and disrespect for existing boundaries. Before the wall was fenced in, it wasn't uncommon to see a mom drive up with a minivan and drop off a group of teenagers with bags, boxes, and a video camera, then drive off. The area is relatively safe, though not far from some more rundown areas. November 2002 Photos 2005 Photos

Otisco Lake

Otisco Lake is one of the smaller Finger Lakes to the east of Rochester, and the southwest of Syracuse. The lake is 5.4 miles long and about 60 feet deep at its greatest depths. The lake is very popular during the summer months, as many people enjoy swimming, fishing and boating. During the winter months, good ice fishing can be expected as well. Lately, the lake has experienced problems with zebra mussels that were brought in on other boats. Due to these zebra mussels, swimmers should take caution and wear the proper footwear. A causeway across the lake was built to carry a road, flooded when the dam raised the level. The road no longer is used. A break in the causeway allows boats to pass between upper and lower parts of the lake. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, "the lake is affected by nonpoint source pollution from agriculture (pesticide and fertilizer use, manure production, and sedimentation resulting from poor tillage practices), residential land use (septic systems, lawncare, and construction), and streambank erosion. Otisco Lake, photos and description on the commercial website nyfalls.com Nearby towns include Skaneateles and Marcellus. A couple nearby Finger Lakes are Skaneateles Lake and Cayuga Lake.

Kiva

Loans That Change Lives From their website http://www.kiva.org : "Kiva lets you connect with and loan money to unique entrepreneurs in the developing world. By choosing a loan on Kiva, you can "sponsor a business" and help the world's working poor make great strides towards economic independence. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates from the entrepreneur you've sponsored. As loans are repaid, you get your loan money back." There are several Rochesterians involved in lending money through Kiva. One of the nice things about this company is it allows you to make a simple loan of as little as $25 and you can pool your money together with other lenders, yet you do not have to manage it, Kiva does all of the work. When the loan is repayed, you receive your money back and are free to reinvest it however you see fit. On their website you can read through the journals of the peple you have helped and see what progress they are making. They also keep track of how the loan is being repaid etc etc. Yes, it is a self serving make you feel good sort of thing, you get a personal profile page and you are linked with the person you are sending money to (if you choose) in "myspace" style, but it truly is a fantastic company making a huge impact on peoples lives empowering people to lift themselves out of poverty and make an economic impact in their villages.
