Ginger Beard

Ginger Beard is the name given to an anonymous artist who left prints and stickers of his work throughout various Rochester neighborhoods in early 2013. His trademark image is a portrait of Abraham Lincoln with a bright red beard and the words "GINGER BEARD" printed Soviet-style above his head. Signs of Ginger Beard were most common in the South Wedge, including one on the famous "wedge of cheese" sculpture. Ginger Beard has also been spotted in North Winton Village, Park Avenue, the Susan B. Anthony Neighborhood, the Village Gate, and even Eastview Mall. One variation was a picture of Uncle Sam wearing a "Gingerbeard Approved" button with a tag line of "I want you to be creative." The images are affixed using a homemade adhesive called wheat paste, a mixture of flour and boiling water. Ginger Beard's aura of mysteriousness is reminiscent of the equally enigmatic Spaceman. However, according to Mike Governale of Rochester Subway, who interviewed Spaceman, the two are not the same person. Both artists have had their work featured in the Art Museum of Rochester. Canadice Lake

Located in southwest Ontario County, Canadice Lake lies 30 miles south of Rochester. It is the smallest and highest of the Finger Lakes and its shorelines are virtually undeveloped. The following description is from Canadice Lake Page on NY Dept. of Environmental Conservation website: Physical Features: Water Quality: Canadice Lake is one of the sources of water for the City of Rochester. It is typically clear but suffers moderate oxygen depletion in summer. While this condition does not seriously threaten trout, it does, temporarily, confine them to a narrow layer of the water column. Special Regulations: Recreational use of Canadice Lake is regulated by the City of Rochester Water Department. Fishing and boating are allowed by permit only. Boats may not exceed 16 feet in length and motors may not exceed 10 h.p. Check your watershed visitor permit for details. Annual permits can be obtained free of charge from a self-service booth at the north end of nearby Hemlock Lake. Public Access Sites: Public boat access is available on the lake's east side near the intersection of Canadice Road and Birch Hill Road, via an unimproved gravel ramp. There are other informal access points along the east shore suitable for cartop boats, shore fishing and ice fishing. Access is by special permit only. Fish Management: Fishery surveys begun in the 1950's revealed a good lake trout population. Records show that lake trout were stocked into Canadice Lake as early as 1942. To diversify the fishery, brown trout and rainbow trout were later added. Stocking of all three continues to the present time along with occasional stocking of surplus landlocked salmon. Trout and salmon may be taken year-round at Canadice. Check your Fishing Regulations Guide for size and bag limits. Smelt and alewives provide the primary salmonid forage with some contributed from yellow perch and minnows. Although Canadice is best suited for salmonid and smallmouth bass, it also provides significant fishing opportunities for largemouth bass and chain pickerel in its limited, shallow water habitat. Similarly, "panfish," including rock bass, yellow perch, bluegills, pumpkinseeds and bullhead, are also important contributors to the fishery. Abandoned Penfield Rinky Dink mini golf course

The Abandoned Penfield Rinky Dink mini golf course was located on Panorama Trail South between Vision Dodge and the driving range on North Washington Street. It's been closed for several years and the property has not been kept up, so it's quite overgrown. The putting green carpet is torn off of most of the course, probably by the skaters that have been seen utilizing the more interesting holes for skating practice. There's a small amount of graffiti and it looks like someone used the ticket stand as target practice, but for the most part the destruction of the wooden benches and stairways seems to be from the weather and plants. UPDATE: As of 9/22/07, the courses have been dismantled. All the wood seen in the pictures has been removed and all structures have been torn down including the light house and the ticket house. The parking lot has been bulldozed and there are piles of dirt and rocks in the corners. You can still find a lot of golf balls and putters though and it's still an interesting place to look around. August 12, 2014 - This lot has been cleared out completely; trees, light posts, and all. Does anybody know what is being built on the land? UPDATE: Oct 6, 2016: A Hampton Inn is currently under construction here. ABC Streets Neighborhood

The ABC Streets Neighborhoods is a quiet, affluent residential enclave named for its eight streets that run in alphabetical order from A-H. From west to east they are: Audubon Street Beverly Street Calumet Street Darwin Street Ericsson Street Faraday Street Girard Street Homer Street Each refers to a famous scientist or inventor. The ABC Neighborhood takes special pride in Morrison Park, a small triangular plot bordered by Culver, Canterbury, and Harvard Streets. The park is well maintained by the residents, who can often be seen planting and weeding. A sign welcoming visitors to the neighborhood was installed in April 2012. Ducktail Barbershop and Montgomery Court Cafe are located on the edge of this neighborhood, at the corner of Park and Colby. Fun fact: George Eastman's dentist lived here and could often been seen walking his pet cheetah on a leash. In their own words The population of our neighborhood is as diverse as its home styles. Many long-time residents, newly-weds, young families with small children, empty nesters, young professionals and college students create a varied and vibrant neighborhood. The quiet, tree-lined streets provide a tranquil retreat for city dwellers. Being within a short walking distance of the many restaurants, shops and establishments along Park Avenue area as well as the recently renovated Wegmans, allows residents of the ABC Streets neighborhood all of the amenities of the area with lower congestion and noise. Our close proximity to Cobb's Hill Park, the recently renovated Culver Road Armory, East Avenue, School #1 and #23, the 490 expressway, the RTS bus line, bicycle lanes, downtown Rochester and its plethora of cultural establishments makes the ABC Streets neighborhood a great place to live! 1 Links City of Rochester description

Great Harvest Bread Store

Park Avenue Location 3-2008 Some goodies at Great Harvest 3-2008 The Great Harvest Bread Stores in the Rochester area were rebranded from their former Montana Mills name, these stores specialize in fresh-baked bread and pastries, with free samples of breads provided. The Park Avenue location is a combination fresh bread store / coffee shop, and attracts shoppers as well as casual coffee seekers. The Monroe Avenue location is a more traditional store. The Park Ave store gets extra points for creative re-use of an existing structure, what used to be an old gas station. Hooray for saving a neat piece of local architecture instead of razing it for something "newer". The unique layout of the establishments gives them a surprisingly charming atmosphere.

Genesee Crossroads Park

Genesee Crossroads Park, also known as Charles Carroll Park, is a relatively small urban park located in the Convention District along the west side of the Genesee River, between Main Street and Andrews Street. It is behind the Holiday Inn and basically on top of the Genesee Crossroads Parking Garage. The Sister Cities Pedestrian Bridge crosses the river in the middle of the park. Benches and picnic areas are available and are popular with office workers at lunchtime in the summer months. The park is located approximately where the notorious old Front Street was located before the days of urban renewal. There is also a sculptural installation by Richard Fleischner called "Rochester Project" that was dedicated in October 1986. Redevelopment In December 2013 it was announced that the City had offered Genesee Crossroads Park as the new site of the proposed Roc City Skatepark. Once completed, it will be the largest skatepark in the country. If successful, it could inspire the creation of other, smaller skateparks throughout the city.1
