Irondequoit Bay Bridge

Photo March 2009 - BradMandell An aerial view of the Irondequoit Bay Bridge. Built over a period of three years, from 1967 to 1969, the Irondequoit Bay Bridge is a 6-lane bridge that spans Irondequoit Bay from Webster on the east to Irondequoit on the west, carrying Route 104. It is the longest bridge in Monroe County. From 1997-1999, a three year reconstruction project was completed. This $17 million project included removal and replacement of the entire bridge deck and guide rails, new lighting, bike paths, and landscaping.1 In 2012 a $14 million rehabilitation of the bridge was started. While this work was occurring in 2013, the bridge was found to have structural issues with 8 of the 84 crossbeams that required the closure of the two outer lanes. 2 See Also: Irondequoit Bay Bridge webcam 1http://www.crane-hogan.com/irondequoit_bay_bridge.htm2http://www.whec.com/article/stories/s3189090.shtml

Spectrum (Charter Communications)

Spectrum is the cable internet provider with the widest coverage in the Rochester area, reaching approximately 94.6% of the city and extending through most suburbs. If Greenlight Networks isn't available at your address yet, Spectrum is the reliable fallback. Plans start at $30/month with no contracts and no data caps. Speeds reach up to 2 Gbps on their highest tier, though cable internet does share bandwidth across neighborhoods, which can mean slower speeds during peak evening hours compared to dedicated fiber. Spectrum also offers TV, phone, and mobile bundles. For many Rochester residents, the setup is: try Greenlight first, fall back to Spectrum if fiber isn't on your street yet, and switch when it arrives. Website: spectrum.com

Five Star Bank Building

The Five Star Bank Building was constructed in 1970. Located at the intersection of Chestnut Street, Court Street, and Broad Street, it is 284 feet tall at 21 stories. The Five Star Bank Building was originally called Marine Midland Plaza then the HSBC Building. It was built and owned by the Tishman Group of New York City. The Chicago firm of Skimore Owings and Merrill was the architect of record, with Bruce Graham and Fazlur Rahman Khan as the main designer/engineer team. Graham and Khan were also the team that designed both the Sears Tower and the John Hancock Building (Big John) in Chicago, Illinois. The exterior, a poured in place reinforced concrete system of columns and beams, is a load bearing "cage" that, combined with the concrete floor slabs and the concrete elevator core, allows the interior to be free of columns, creating flexible floor plans that can be easily changed to serve the tenants needs. The flow of gravity down the sides of the building is expressed in the undulating columns at the lower stories. Called the "arching effect," this point of visual interest shows Khan and Graham's expertise at using the engineering solutions as a major part of the building's architectural design. The design team also included no corner columns running the height of the building. This effect is best appreciated at ground level, looking straight up at a corner. The concourse includes a cafeteria, an auditorium and a sunken garden. Italian travertine (a sedimentary rock often mistakenly called a "limestone" or "marble") covers the exterior concrete structure.

Liberty Pole

Protest Site The Liberty Pole This site has become a popular location for organized protest in our city, due to its symbolic significance. In many ways this serves as a disadvantage to protestors, as it allows them to be more easily pushed from relevant protest areas to this statue1. 2005 Usenet discussion about Bush Protest - protestors assembling at the Liberty Pole, several miles away from the actual location of President George W Bush's 2005 visit. Music Festivals - have held a Wednesday Nights @ The Liberty Pole "... European-style street party dubbed Pole-A-Palooza..." 1This was the case when protestors speaking out against President George W Bush were not allowed anywhere near the actual site of his speech when he came to the area to discuss social security reform in 2005. Rather than contesting this, most protestors assembled effectively out of sight at the Liberty Pole.
